MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte lauded the approval of the anti-mining ordinance Tuesday by the Davao City Council.
The mayor has always been against mining, a strong stance that he shared with his son, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, and his daughter, former mayor Inday Sara Duterte.
The Dutertes — no matter how they often disagree over many things, especially on policies — are one in saying that mining results in nothing that benefits communities and the country.
On Friday, Duterte reiterated why he is fully supportive of the mining ban in Davao City. He said mining is an environmental concern and at the same time, a social problem.
“I’ve always been against mining,” he said. “I do not want to offend anybody but historically, not only in Diwalwal but also in other places, mining is also a social problem.”
He said the economic benefits of mining are not enough to outweigh the destruction it leaves many years after.
“It is not worth it,” he said. “The government gets very little royalty.”
He cited the situation in the provinces of Agusan where mining operations resulted in the destruction of mountains and pollution of rivers.
“If you look at the Google map, you will see how mining has destroyed the environment,” he said. | JMT, NewsDesk
