President-elect Rodrigo Duterte offered anti-mining activist Gina Lopez the position of secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The offer came after Lopez, chair of the ABS-CBN Lingkod Bayan Foundation, visited Duterte at the Presidential Guest House in Davao City late Monday afternoon.
In a video released by state-run Radio TV Malacanang (RTVM), Duterte said he offered the position to Lopez, a known anti-mining activist — a position he previously said will be given to the Left.
Lopez earlier expressed her support for Duterte’s bid for presidency, saying Duterte’s ‘gutsiness’ was needed in the fight to protect the Philippine environment.
“The reason why I am leaning towards Duterte is because he is gutsy, he is tapang (daring),” she said in an interview with Karen Davila.
Lopez, who is yet to announce her decision, said she felt honored with the trust given to her by Duterte.
